Hematology

The hematology laboratory provides diagnostic testing for the various DHEC and other programs that need complete blood counts (CBC) and related tests in patient monitoring and evaluation. Using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures the laboratory is able to offer white blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count, platelet count, red blood cell indices, white cell differential and, in certain situations, reticulocyte counts. Testing is offered Monday through Friday.

The Immunohematology laboratory provides services to the maternity and family planning clinics in their assessment of maternal immunohematological status. The examinations offered include ABO grouping, Rh typing and antibody screening. Positive antibody screening specimens are sent to a reference laboratory for identification and, if a clinically significant antibody is identified, a titer is determined. Testing is offered Monday through Friday.

The T-Lymphocyte Immunophenotyping laboratory provides services primarily for the sexually transmitted disease (STD)/HIV programs in the various county health departments. Using state-of-the-art laser technology, this laboratory reports both absolute cell count and percent positive for CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes. In addition, a CD4/CD8 ratio is reported. The addition of a CBC result (from hematology lab) completes this examination and it is referred to as the Lymphocyte Subset Panel. Testing is offered Monday through Friday.
