District Support

This Division of Regional Support is non-regulatory and functions as a support service for the Bureau, the other Divisions, and the Regions. The Division coordinates the statewide planning of environmental health activities. Other responsibilities include managing the Bureau's Daily Activity Reporting System and maintaining an inventory of the facilities under regulation. Additionally, the division oversees the Environmental Health services of fee billing, collection, and budgeting.

Environmental Health Training School

The Bureau of Environmental Health conducts an annual five-week training program, open to new Environmental Health employees from throughout the state who have completed one year of employment. The Environmental Health School affords an opportunity for new employees to develop skills and gain valuable knowledge about the programs and services provided by DHEC, as well as fundamental technical training and information about Environmental Health programs. The success of the school relies heavily on the participation and assistance of many staff members of the Bureau of Environmental Health and from all parts of DHEC, whose efforts and contributions to the annual training program are very important for developing knowledgeable employees. Alex Moss is the coordinator of this annual program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Permit Fees

Is a fee required for a food service permit?
Yes, payment of an initial fee of $60 is required, and is paid at the local health department prior to the issuance of the food service permit. To retain the permit, a renewal fee must be paid annually.

Why is a fee required?
Fees offset the cost of performing food service inspections.

When are renewal fees due?
A renewal fee invoice will be sent to you yearly.

What is the amount of the renewal fee?
The amount of the renewal fee varies and is based on your annual gross sales of food and food products for the previous year. A fee schedule is included with the renewal invoice.

May I pay my fee with a credit card?
Yes, VISA and MASTERCARD are accepted, as well as checks and money orders.

Do all food service businesses pay a fee?
Most businesses do pay a fee. However, state law provides a fee exemption for charitable organizations, schools K-12, and other limited types of facilities. A written request for exemption must be submitted each year. Additional information is available at your local health department.

What should I do if I sell or close my business?
Please notify your inspector at the local health department.

If I sell my business, are the permit and the inspection fee transferable to the new owner?
No, the new owner must apply for a new permit and pay an inspection fee.

What if I own two or more stores?
We can send individual renewal fee invoices for each location, or we can send one statement listing all the invoices for your stores. If you wish to establish a multiple-billing account, please contact Regional Support at 803-896-0647.
