
What is CHESS?
CHESS is a Web-based system that allows physicians, nurses, and lab professionals to notify DHEC when a patient has any of the required reportable diseases. It is designed to make fulfilling this important provider responsibility as quick and simple as possible.
CHESS is used to report most reportable diseases*, such as:
- Ehrlichiosis
- Salmonella
- Giardiasis
- Shigellosis
- Hepatitis
- Streptococcus
- Invasive Strep
- Pertussis
- Pneumonia
- RMSF
- Listeriosis
- Tetanus
- Lyme Disease
- Varicella
- Malaria
- VRE
- Meningitis
- West Nile

South Carolina is one of the first states to use a system of this kind. Local public health departments have been using the system for more than a year. We are now offering CHESS to other health care providers around the state.
*CHESS is currently not used to report Tuberculosis or Lead
