Mission Statement
The mission of the Council is to promote the health and well-being of South Carolinians of all ages by advancing the levels of physical activity. The Council shall serve as an advisor to the state on issues related to physical activity, providing vision and leadership to agencies and policy makers.
Did You Know?
According to 2003 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) State Summary Data, that almost 54% of South Carolinians do not meet the recommendations for physical activity. (Moderate physical activity for 30 or more minutes per day, five or more days per week or vigorous physical activity for 20 or more minutes per day, three or more days per week)
According to the 1999 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, South Carolina High School students:
- 25% are either overweight or at risk for overweight.
- 78% had not participated in sufficient moderate physical activity during the past 7 days
- 82% did not attend physical education (PE) class daily
According to the 1999 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, only 21 percent of South Carolina high school students participate in moderate physical activity, which is among the lowest in the nation.

The 1999 report "Physical Activity, It's Your Move" produced by the USC Prevention Research Center for DHEC reported a lack of physical activity in South Carolina caused an estimated:
- 21 percent of all heart disease.
- 21 percent of all cases of high blood pressure.
- 25 percent of all cases of colon cancer.
- 40 percent of all diabetes.
- 33 percent of all osteoporotic falls with fracture
