The South Carolina Violent Death Reporting System
The South Carolina Violent Death Reporting System (SCVDRS) collects violent death data in South Carolina as part of the National Violent Death Reporting System. Data from death certificates, coroner reports, law enforcement, and child fatality review records is collected to answer the critical questions of when, where, and how violent deaths occur. In September 2002, South Carolina was chosen as one of the first pilot states to receive funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). The goals of this five year grant are:
- To establish a state violent death information collection system which will become a part of the National Violent Death Reporting System
- To produce violent death data products appropriate for setting priorities and guiding prevention policies and activities that will be supplied to key stakeholders within the state, at CDC and nationally.
The partnership between DHEC, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), South Carolina Coroner’s Association, South Carolina Child Fatality Review Committee, and the South Carolina Budget and Control Board’s Office of Research and Statistics continue to strengthen surrounding data collection, linkage and evaluation of violent death information.
