Ambient Groundwater Quality Monitoring

South Carolina depends upon its ground-water resources to supply an estimated 40% of its water supply, encompassing public water systems as well as private water wells. To monitor the ambient quality of this valuable resource, an Ambient Groundwater Quality Network of 115 existing public and private water supply wells has been established which provides ground-water quality data representing all of the State's major aquifers.  Although a great deal of ground-water quality monitoring is currently being done, this is generally at regulated industrial or commercial sites which have known or potential ground-water contamination and the samples taken are usually taken from the surficial aquifer (water table) only. The Ambient Groundwater Quality Network was established to monitor the differences in water chemistry due to natural, and not man made effects and is comprehensive in that it covers all the major Aquifers in South Carolina. These include the Black Creek, Middendorf, Black Mingo, Pee Dee, Tertiary Limestone, Tertiary Sands, Piedmont Bedrock, Piedmont Saprolite, and the Surficial Sands.

Data derived from this monitoring network is analyzed for the purpose of identifying variations in water chemistry among the state's major aquifers and developing an understanding of water-quality across South Carolina.

The sampling network of 115 wells representing various aquifers and depths is currently sampled on a five year cycle.
