DHEC names 2008 All-Health Team student winners
COLUMBIA – Blythewood High School was selected as the first place gold award among eight preventive health projects, and received $5,000 as part of the All-Health Team’s annual awards ceremony, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
The second place silver award of $3,000 went to DIVA, Inc. for its DIVAS Healthy Lifestyle Project. Lancaster High School took the third place bronze award for its “Save Our Skin” cancer awareness project, which was sponsored by DHEC Region 3.
Estill Elementary School won an honorable mention for its Asthma Awareness project, which was sponsored by DHEC’s Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control.
The top-winning project was coordinated by a group of Health Occupation students from Blythewood High School. The Living Healthy project was designed to address heart disease and stroke prevention through proper nutrition and exercise. The students speak to young people in schools, churches and community groups. They teach their audiences about the warning signs of heart disease and stroke by using PowerPoint presentations, displays and exercise demonstrations. The students also promote the importance of CPR.
Other teams recognized as monthly winners were Water Works of Estill Elementary School; Monarch Cloggers of Manning Elementary School; Nutrition on the Run of Chapin Elementary School; and Reading and Riding of Gettys Middle School.
The All-Health Team is a public-private partnership consisting of WIS-TV and DHEC. Each month during the school year, the partnership recognizes and rewards youth in South Carolina for their outstanding efforts to promote preventive health. Each year it recognizes the top three All-Health Team winners.
