Blythewood High School students named Champions of the Environment
COLUMBIA – A $500 Champions of the Environment grant has been awarded to Blythewood High School for its “Living in Harmony with Nature” project, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“Blythewood students taking part in the ‘Living in Harmony with Nature’ project have a goal of reducing their family’s carbon footprint by 10 percent,” said Nassim Lewis, a Blythewood High teacher. “Each student will develop an action plan to reduce emissions and work with their family to carry it out.”
“This project will have a positive effect on the environment by saving energy and reducing the pollutants associated with energy production,” said Lynne LaSalle, coordinator for the Champions of the Environment program. “It also has the potential to be carried out in other schools across the state.”
The $500 grant will be used for educational materials and incentives. In addition to the grant, the students will receive Champions’ giveaway items and a commercial will be made about the project to air on WIS-TV in Columbia.
Champions of the Environment is celebrating its 15th year of rewarding environmental action and awareness in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students. Champions is sponsored by International Paper, Eastman Chemical Company, WIS-TV and DHEC. Ten grants are awarded during the school year over two grant cycles. Applications for Champions’ next round of grants are due January 15.
