Barnwell High School students named Champions of the Environment

COLUMBIA – A Champions of the Environment grant has been awarded to the Biology II students at Barnwell High School for their Turtle Hurdles project, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“Scottie Moore and her students have planned an ambitious project to help sea turtles by educating Edisto Island’s town council and coastal business owners about the benefits of ‘lights out for turtles,’” said Lynne LaSalle coordinator for the Champions of the Environment program. “It’s great that they also want to help their local community learn more about the coastal environment.”

LaSalle said the school will receive $500 to use for this project. The money will fund the creation of educational materials for use by the non-profit program “Learning Through Loggerheads,” and a display about southeastern coastal habitats for the Barnwell County Museum.

In addition to the $500 grant, the students will receive Champions giveaway items and a commercial will be made about the project to air on WIS-TV in Columbia.

Champions of the Environment is celebrating its 15th year of rewarding environmental action and awareness in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students. Champions is sponsored by International Paper, Eastman Chemical Company, WIS-TV and DHEC. Ten grants are awarded during the school year over two grant cycles. Applications for Champions’ next round of grants are due January 15.
