Stone Academy of Communication Arts named Champion of the Environment

COLUMBIA – A project to reduce erosion in Croft Park has earned students at Stone Academy of Communication Arts recognition from Champions of the Environment, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“Having students participate in a landscape project that will help control storm water run-off, lessen pollution, and at the same time beautify their playground, is a great lesson,” said Carolyn Henry, Stone Academy’s coordinator on the erosion project.

“Sediment from erosion is a major runoff pollutant in South Carolina’s waterways,” said Lynne LaSalle, project coordinator for Champions of the Environment. “By planting grass, native plants and trees to hold the soil in place, these students are addressing this troublesome problem.”

LaSalle said Stone Academy will receive $500 to use for its project. In addition to the $500 grant, Stone Academy will receive Champions’ giveaway items and a commercial will be made about the project to air on WIS-TV in Columbia.

Champions of the Environment is celebrating its 15th year of rewarding environmental action and awareness in South Carolina’s kindergarten through 12th grade students. Champions is sponsored by International Paper, Eastman Chemical Company, WIS-TV and DHEC. Ten grants are awarded during the school year over two grant cycles. Applications for Champions’ next round of grants are due January 15.
