DHEC commends two Spartanburg orthodontists

SPARTANBURG - Orthodontists Gary Smiley, DDS, and Steven J. Smiley, DDS, were presented with an award of appreciation for 20 years of advocacy on behalf of children with special dental needs, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

Drs. Gary Smiley and Steven Smiley were presented the award by DHECs Divisions of Oral Health, Children with Special Health Care Needs and Children's Rehabilitative Services programs, said Rose Alford, program coordinator for DHEC's Division of Children with Special Health Care Needs. The father and son orthodontists serve the community as practitioners, and as volunteers, working to assure the availability of quality orthodontic treatment for children.

They are members of the Spartanburg area craniofacial team, which is a group that helps children with congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and cleft palate. The team also includes a dentist as well as a speech pathologist, geneticist, plastic surgeon, dietitian, social worker, nurse and administrative support staff members.

The Smileys have been child advocates for over 20 years. They have had a positive influence on the services this state has available for children in need of orthodontics, Alford said.
