Some Beaufort County shellfish beds reopen
COLUMBIA – Conditionally approved shellfish beds in Beaufort County that were closed Nov. 8 due to excessive rainfall have reopened, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.
“Samples collected earlier this week indicate water quality acceptable for shellfish harvest”, said Charles Newell, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section. “Recent rainfall totals in these areas have been moderate and we are hopeful that this trend will continue.”
The following conditionally approved shellfish beds have been opened:
- Portions of Broad Creek at Hilton Head
- Portions of Battery Creek near Beaufort and Port Royal
- Jenkins Creek, Warsaw Flats, and adjacent areas near Ladies, Warsaw and Polawana islands

For information about beds in the Georgetown County area, contact DHEC’s Region 6 EQC office in Myrtle Beach at (843) 238-4378.
