‘Imagine That’ troupe receives All-Health Team award
COLUMBIA – The “Imagine That!” improvisational theater troupe has been selected for the All-Health Team for their efforts to spread healthy lifestyle messages across the state.
The Spartanburg-based troupe, made up of students from middle and high school students, performs throughout South Carolina at schools, churches, conferences and community events.
“Since its development in 1994, the troupe has used theater as an innovative way to reach youth and adults through dramatic presentations on topics such as HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, eating disorders, suicide, drugs, smoking and other health-related issues,” said Jeri Smith, project coordinator. “Their performances are designed to stir emotions, inspire better decision-making, promote healthier lifestyles and raise awareness of the consequences of behavior.”
“Not only does the troupe educate the community about substance abuse and making better decisions, but they in turn learn a great deal about health-related issues by attending workshops and conferences,” Smith said. “Troupe members want to continue to spread the word about living a healthy lifestyle and being alcohol- and drug-free by promoting the program in even more communities; and the troupe wants to train other organizations to make presentations, both in and beyond South Carolina.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and WIS-TV 10 sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community. For being named to the All-Health Team, the “Imagine That” troupe will receive $500, T-shirts and other All-Health items, recognition on the All-Health Web site and a television spot on WIS-TV 10.
