Broad Creek conditionally approved shellfish beds reopened in Beaufort County

COLUMBIA – The conditionally approved shellfish harvesting area in Broad Creek on Hilton Head Island has reopened, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has announced.

The shellfish beds were closedseveral weeks ago because ofexcessive amounts of rainfall and the potential for contamination.

“Water quality tests show that bacteria levels are acceptable for shellfish harvesting in the conditionally approved beds at Broad Creek,” said Charles Newell, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Program.
