Applications and registration being accepted for Dry Cleaning Restoration Trust Fund
COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Dry Cleaning Restoration Trust Fund is currently registering eligible dry cleaners and accepting applications for funding eligibility, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“The fund is designed to pay for the assessment and remediation of environmental contamination arising from dry cleaning facilities,” said John Cresswell, assistant director of DHEC’s Division of Site Assessment and Remediation. “We’re taking this opportunity, before the Nov. 24 deadline, to let dry cleaners know about their options and responsibilities in South Carolina.
“The law requires registration by dry cleaning facility operators, or property owners where operational dry cleaning machines are on-site. Registration must take place immediately with the South Carolina Department of Revenue, except for those who legally opted out of the fund in 1995,” Cresswell said. “Additionally, property owners or facility operators who have had operational dry cleaning machines on-site since 1995 need to contact the DOR immediately to determine whether or not they owe fees.”
Cresswell said dry cleaners must apply with DHEC, in addition to registering with the DOR, to be eligible for the fund.
“Eligibility provides a means for the state to finance and conduct environmental assessment, remediation and clean up for sites that have been impacted by dry cleaning operations,” he said.
