Coast Weeks 2006 set

CHARLESTON —- Opportunities for adventure, learning and relaxation abound during Coast Weeks celebration Sept. 16 to Oct. 7, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

“Dozens of Coast Weeks activities are planned for our citizens to learn, appreciate our environment and to have fun,” said Carolyn Boltin, deputy commissioner of DHEC’s Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. “Paddle down black river swamps, search for dolphins in the Ace Basin or explore the beaches of our barrier islands. There is something for everyone.”

Boltin said Coast Weeks is an annual nationwide celebration of coastal resources.

“South Carolina has some of the most beautiful beaches and coastal areas in the country,” she said. “It’s only natural that we have one of the largest and best Coast Weeks celebrations in the country. As part of DHEC’s mission to preserve and promote South Carolina’s natural heritage, we encourage you and your family to have fun and discover all that our coast has to offer. By participating in Coast Weeks activities, you’ll get to explore and appreciate our coastal zone and learn more about the efforts under way to preserve our natural legacy for generations to come.”

Boltin said Coast Weeks events are sponsored by public and private sector organizations and led by experts in nature and history. Some Coast Weeks events require registration and some charge a fee, while others are free.

A calendar of events can be obtained at DHEC’s offices in Charleston, Beaufort or Myrtle Beach. To request a copy, call (843) 744-5838, or download the (Adobe Acrobat PDF) calendar from DHEC’s Web site by visiting: http://www.scdhec.gov/environment/ocrm/outreach/docs/coastweeks2006.pdf
